OUT
AND ABOUT:
By Chuck Crawford
THERE'S TRUTH IN GUMBO |
 |
This past month
I was fortunate enough to catch Bill 'The
Sauce Boss' Wharton at the House of Blues
Cafe. Those who have been here in Brevard
long enough may have witnessed the gospel
of gumbo, possibly at Gizmo's or SBI.
Mr. Wharton began his sermon on cookin'
blues and gumbo around 10:30pm. Playing
his 53 year old guitar, (a one of a kind,
Fender Tele, for those who care) the very
talented Sauce Boss slid his way through
a mix of classic blues, and original compositions....meanwhile,
as he stirred the pot (his gumbo, that is)
the magical smells of spices and Liquid
Summer - his own recipe, mixed with his
sweet southern slide and was a treat for
the senses.
Ever the gracious entertainer, Bill and
the band spoke with everyone on their break,
while continuing to stir the pot, of course.
This also gave me a chance to buy his Interactive
CD/DVD, 'Recipes', a bottle of sauce, and
talk guitar gear with him. The second set
The Sauce Boss pulled out a 1959 Les Paul
Special, and played some beautiful open
G tuning slide.
Those who have witnessed the glory of gumbo
knew that a treat was a comin', and at 12:30,
everyone was invited to have a bowl...made
with love, like your grandma would.
On a really cool note, when The Sauce Boss
is on tour, and has a day off, they will
go to the local homeless shelter, and offer
up Free Blues and Gumbo, to lift the spirits,
and fill the tummy.
To learn more on the Gospel of Gumbo,
